Located in inner-city Melbourne, The Colonnade House is a refined example of contemporary classical architecture realised through a close collaboration between Rob Mills Architecture, builder Cobild, Bruhn Limestone and master stonemasons Wilmoore Allstone.
Constructed using premium Mount Gambier Limestone, the residence demonstrates the scale, permanence and material richness that natural limestone can bring to modern Australian architecture.
The defining feature of the home is a monumental colonnade comprising one hundred individually crafted limestone columns.
Supplied as solid limestone blocks, each column was dry-laid by hand prior to the intricate fluting being carved on-site by Wilmoore Allstone. The process highlights the exceptional workability and versatility of Mount Gambier Limestone when paired with highly skilled craftsmanship.
Beyond the colonnade, a suite of custom limestone mouldings and architectural details frame the residence, creating depth, proportion and a timeless material palette throughout the home.
