How to Lay Premium Rockface
- Size of stone. This should be sized at 240 x 660 x 100 with a 20mm Rockface.
- Set out course length by measurement to suit a 665mm stretcher bond. This allows for some variation in block length. Allow for 250mm course height.
- Allow 10mm Vertical and Horizontal mortar courses.
- Set out each corner as per attached diagram 1 using a spirit level to ensure all vertical and horizontals are to exact requirements. These corners must be accurate. Ensure all course heights are maintained at 250mm.
- Use a stringline and line blocks to build wall body. Build in one course at a time to stringline at top of bevel and align Rockface top edge arise to this line.
- Ensure face of stone is not hit with any hard objects, as it will show marks.
- Stone should be free of stone dust on bedding surfaces. Bedding surfaces should be dampened with clean water before applying mortar.
- Mix mortar at six of sand, one of limel and one of cement. Use a plasticiser if required.
- Mortar colour should be as light as possible and as close to stone colour as possible. Use suitable colour white to light cream sand and briten lite or white cement in lieu of normal grey cement. Mix sample mortar and allow to dry to ensure acceptable colour. Lay to a rodded joint.
- Ensure face of stone is built free of mortar splashes and other stains. Ensure stone work is wire brushed clean on a regular basis.
- Closures or special cuts should be cut to exact square and this edge Rockfaced back with a bolster to match other Rock Face.
- Any free standing walls should be propped where necessary during course of construction and where necessary after construction until secured by other means. NOTE: A lime mortar mix takes much longer to set.
- All stone should be selected before laying to ensure they meet size and colour requirements.
- All stone should be blended from each pallet and from pallet to pallet to ensure an even colour blend.
- Damp proofing should be to your specifications. Wire or other approved ties should be used and attached to as per normal brick work.
- Galvanised angle bars should be used for all openings as with brick. Angle bars should be to your specification.
- Refer to General description of Bruhn SA 41 Sealant and its Application Sheet to ensure stone is kept clean during construction for later sealing.
- Stone sills are supplied in lengths of 1320 x 240 x 100 Plain Face. Cut the back off before laying as with brick on edge and lay in at a 30 to 40 degree angle to ensure water run off. Lay as you would with brick on edge. Sills should be put in at the end of the job and protected against damage during construction.
- A row of Plainface Stone can be used to attach the verandah timber to in lieu of Rockface.
How to Lay Premium Plainface
- Size of stone can be 240 or 290 high x 660 long x 100mm wide. Other widths are available for certain applications.
- Set out course height by measurement to suit a 670mmstretcher bond course length. NOTE 1: Allow for correct corner dimensions to ensure stretcher bond. NOTE 2: It is common practice to allow for a stretcher bond of 665mm to allow for possible variation in the average length of the stone.
- Allow 10mm Vertical and Horizontal mortar courses.
- Set out each corner first to no more than three course heights over existing works. Use a spirit level to ensure all vertical and horizontals are to exact requirements. These corners must be accurate.
- Use a stringline and line blocks to build wall body. Build in one course at a time to stringline.
- Use spirit level to ensure wall body stone is vertical and face flat to last laid stone and previous laid course.
- Ensure face of stone is not hit with any hard objects, as it will show marks.
- Stone should be free of stone dust on bedding surfaces.
- Bedding surfaces should be dampened with clean water before applying mortar.
- Mortar at six of sand, one of limil and one of cement, should be used with a plasticiser if required.
- Mortar colour should be as close to stone colour as possible. Use a normal brickies sand to a creamor whitish colour utilising Brighton Lite orWhite cement. Mix a sample for client approval. Limestone crushed sand may be available on request.
- Build to a rodded joint.
- Ensure face of stone is built free of mortar splashing and other stains. All work should be wired brushed clean where necessary on a daily basis.
- Closures or special cuts should be cut to exact square.
- Any free standing walls should be propped where necessary during course of construction, and where necessary after construction until secured by other means. Note, a lime mortar mix as used takes longer to set.
- All stone should be selected before laying to ensure they meet size and colour requirements and build with the best face showing. All stone should be blended from each pallet and frompallet to pallet to ensure an even colour blend.
- Damp proofing should be to your local council requirements and at least to brick standard.
- Allow vertical weep holes in bottomoutside layer as with brick to vent cavity.
- Wire ties should be galvanised and nailed into stone.
- Galvanised angle bars should be used for all openings as with brick. Angle bars should be to your brick specification.
- Refer to sealant instructions for protection of stone during construction to allow for ease of sealant application.
